00:00 Fashion vs. Style Introduction
On our website, throughout the menswear sphere, the terms “fashion” and “style” are regularly employed. Obviously, we’re approaching these topics from our position as a classic menswear community. But, this post is not about degrading or insulting fashion. Instead, we were only interested in actually figuring out what distinguishes the two.
Not all of our statements are intended to be absolutes, and ultimately, they are our informed opinions. Our hope is to lay out assessments that are fair to everyone and will simulate some great discussion.
01:15 1. Fashion is Temporary While Style is Timeless
02:35 2. Fashion is Impersonal While Style is Personal
03:50 3. Fashion is Dated While Style is Versatile
05:11 4. Fashion is (Often) Outlandish While Style is (Usually) Subtle
06:38 5. Fashion Seeks Convenience While Style Seeks Quality
08:00 6. Fashion is Fast While Style is Learned
09:02 7. Fashion is Difficult to Attain While Style is Attainable
10:42 8. Fashion is Exclusionary Whyle Style is Inviting
Fashion is a way of dressing that is prominent and valued socially because of its innovativeness, novelty, and cultural relevance.
Style is the distinctive way of dressing that leverages the wearer’s personal style, all while exuding self-confidence and still being generally appealing to others. We can take this definition a step further by noting that: Classic style entails all aspects of style generally and is grounded in time-tested principles of aesthetics.
Ultimately, whether you consider yourself a devotee of fashion or style as a personal choice, we certainly see the value of both approaches to menswear, although we personally prefer a style-based approach.

In the past few episodes of History Traveler, we've been looking at places like the Eagle's Nest and the Berghof, but it wasn't just Hitler who had a mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden. In this episode, we're looking at some of the other sites where some of the most notorious figures of the Third Reich set up and where Hitler put the finishing touches on Mein Kampf.

'Could You Survive as a Victorian Factory Worker?'
As new technologies emerged throughout the 19th century, and the use of water and steam power became commonplace, millions of rural workers, including thousands of children, descended on the growing industrial towns to work in mills and factories. Northern cities such as Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield became industrial powerhouses, exporting textiles such as cotton, wool, silk and linen worldwide to Britain's expanding empire. As well as producing textiles, these establishments would generate enormous profits for a new class of industrialists and entrepreneurs.
But what was ordinary life like for a Victorian factory worker? What were the conditions and safety standards like in a mill in Victorian England? And how did their lives compare to ours today?
In this video, History Hit presenters Luke Tomes and Louee Dessent delve deep into the historic spirit of the 1800s industrial revolution, filling the shoes of a wealthy Victorian industrialist and a poor Victorian labourer respectively at National Trust's Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, built in 1784 by the renowned entrepreneur Samuel Greg.
Together, using contemporary accounts and testimony, they'll explore how your experience of the industrial revolution could be very different, depending on what you did for a living... and your place in society.
So the question is, could you survive as a Victorian factory worker? Watch the video to find out!
